Aidan Meller writes: "When I painted this, I made the crowd scene from people we actually knew. They wore modern clothes. The background was made up from a number of places, typical of what we have all seen. Afterwards the people represented were really affected to see themselves mocking Jesus on the cross. It brings the reality of the situation to us. This is made worse by Christ looking back, to the Father. It makes us question why this all had to happen. It places us all into the scene."
